A Borrowed Life

If I choose to live elsewhere,
Far from here
Distant from the wild, unexpected
Places of my imagination
The colours will mute.
The mysteries may hide.
Adventures abandon me,
Even before they arrive
Vitality’s pulse will slow.
My rhythm flattened out
By domesticity
And the straight lines
Of business as usual.
If I choose to live elsewhere,
I will lead a borrowed life.
